Yesterday evening I wanted to take my parents to one of my favourite restaurants in the Marolles, but since literally everything was closed (No-one is hungry on Monday evening?!), we walked on until we came across Le Perroquet, which kitchen was open, yay!
The menu was simple, but original. They only serve pita, but they have an interesting variety of meat and toppings. Also vegetarians will be satisfied. Along with the pita -served in a little basket- come four different extra sauces to top your pita with: curry, garlic, provençal and cocktail. The portions are not that big, which leaves room for dessert.
The food was really good, but the service was slow and a bit unprofessional. ("Here's your uncorked bottle of wine and your glasses. Now take care of it yourself.") But that was not the real shocker. Out of the limited selection of (expensive) beers, we ordered Kwak. A little later, our beer came... served in an Orval glass! I know, some of you might wonder what the big deal is, but to us Belgians, this kind of mistake is a real sacrilege. Maybe even more so because it concerns Kwak, which usually comes in a very special Kwak vessel held by a wooden clamp. Seriously, the taste of a beer varies depending on the glass it's served in.
Anyways, lesson learnt. We won't go to Le Perroquet to drink beer. On the other side, although the drinks were rather expensive, the food is very reasonably priced for a restaurant that close to the well-off area of le Sablon. All pita's cost around 8,50 euros.
Another feature that speaks in its advantage are the beautiful Art Nouveau elements. Marble tables, stained glass windows, antique-style chairs and beautiful Art Nouveau murals... One could spend hours marvelling at the details.
The atmospheric setting alone makes it worth a visit, just make sure you're not too hungry and not in hurry ;)
- Address: Rue Watteeu, 31 Sablon 1000
- Opening times: open every day from noon till midnight
